The grand vizier's garden party

Today when I woke up, my first thought went to the amazing album "Ummagumma". I actually rarely met people who said they liked this album. I also think that there are a lot of people just thinking of this album as one of the most psychedelic album by Pink Floyd, and therefor they think they might not like it. Well, they should really give it a go. I rarely like an album or song just by listening to it once. You often have to be open-minded and don't judge before you know what it's all about.

"You can trust us"

""The grand vizier's garden party" is an instrumental piece by Nick Mason. It's the last track on the album - the studio album. "Ummagumma" is a two disc album - one live and one studio disc. On the studio disc, each member had a solo composition, and "The grand vizier's party" was Mason's contribution.
This piece is little more then an extended nine minute drum solo by Nick with electronically percussion.
Tommy Vance said this about the song:
"Anyone who had suffered the album this far in the expectation of some programme music was likely to be severely dissapointed by this stage most listeners had long since given up the ghost".

A Pin Floyd book by Tommy Vance

I actually think it's an amusing track. It start and end's witht the same lovely melody, but the middle part is totally different. When the song start, you almost expect the song to have some similar melodies during the entire song. But no! Maybe that's why they have 'split' the song into three parts: Enterance/Entertainment/Exit.
There are many songs on the studio disc that the band have shared in different parts. You have for example "Sysyphus parts 1-4". It's their thing, and I like it.

Nick Mason

I remember when I was quite younger, I was listening to this album, and I remember that I got a bit scared while listening to this part. It sounds so dark and mysteriou in some parts, and that freaked me out a bit. It didn't help that I was listening to the song during one night I couldn't sleep. I actually think it was the same night I really listened to "Atom heart mother" for the first time as well. All I know is that my passion for this band have grown since I 'discovered' this music and it's brilliancy.

Cheers to all you beautiful people out there

I know I will be listening to "Ummagumma" today. An album with so many great songs, and the true psychedelic sound I love.
Hope you all have a wonderful saturday.

Yet another movie

The weekend is here, and I have absolutely no plans all weekend, which is quite nice. I've been living in Belfast for just over a month now, and I really like it here, but I miss all my Pink Floyd dvd's, all the great posters, pictures etc, that are in my flat in Stavanger. Since I got here, I've actually not been listening to Pink Floyd as much as I used to.
But that's gonna change.

Guinness & Pink Floyd

For the first time in a while, it's one of these days you know you have absolutely nothing to do! The first thing I did when I realised this, was to put on Pink Floyd. Luckily I have all the albums on my computer + some live dvd's. But I went to youtube to see if there were any good Roger Waters - The Wall clip, but I didn't find any great ones. So I just choose another Pink Floyd live concert. And I found one from the late 80's, so no Roger Waters, but that's ok. I just needed some Pink Floyd.

David, Nick & Rick

The third song at this concert was "Yet another movie". It's never been a song that I've really listened too, but every time I hear it, I know that I love it and have to listen to it more, but I always forget. Well, not this time!
The last 7-8 months have been a bit difficult for me. Loads of things happening - mostly in my head, but then it's been so good to listen to music that make you feel better every time. I see Pink Floyd as the best medicine for everything. And the most effective medicine as well! So during the more difficult times I've been through, this album have been like a guiding light. There are so many great songs! I know I'm a Roger Waters girl, but I never said I didn't like the music made by the three other men.

Miss my PF filled flat

"Yet another movie" don't have the typical psychedelic sound, but more the PF-without-Roger sound. Whisch is also great, just in another way. I've never thought a song by Pink Floyd was bad. They are all great!
I actually met a guy in Dublin last weekend who said "Fuck the Pink Floyd"... He had no idea of whom he was talking too. I think he ment to be funny, but it was a great way to make me ignore him.
But back to the song - it also reminds me of the summer. It was during my exams I really started to listening to this album, so after my exams, I went home to my parents and then me and my mum went to our cabin by the sea. While I was there I got to relax a lot, and listen to my favourite music. So this song also reminds me of summer. And maybe that is one of the reasons it makes me feel better sometimes.

In a boat last summer, listening to "A momentary lapse of reason"

Miss the summer! Can't wait to go back to this paradise this summer!!

Wow, this got a bit personal, so now I will focus the rest of the blog on the song! I promise :)

The song is written by David Gilmour and Patric Leonard (an American songwriter, keyboardist and music producer). It is of course sung by Gilmoure. You can recognice that beautiful voice everywhere. This song is actually called "Yet another movie,/Round and round". It's less a two-part song as one with an instrumental play out. It's a song that Pink Floyd played at every show from 1987-1987. The song also contains movie snippets from Bogart/Bergman (Casablanca).
So all I have to say, is that this is a song to love!

The view makes you fall into the songs!

I wish you all a wonderful weekend with Pink Floyd music. I know I will ;)
The song and lyrics are to be found at the bottom - so please enjoy the music and sing a long :D

One sound, one single sound
One kiss, one single kiss
A face outside the window pane
However did it come to this?

A man who ran, a child who cried
A girl who heard, a voice that lied
The sun that burned a fiery red
The vision of an empty bed

The use of force, he was so tough
She'll soon submit, she's had enough
The march of fate, the broken will
Someone is lying very still

He has laughed and he has cried
He has fought and he has died
He's just the same as all the rest
He's not the worst, he's not the best

And still this ceaseless murmuring
The babbling that I brook
The seas of faces, eyes upraised
The empty screen, the vacant look

A man in black on a snow white horse
A pointless life has run its course
The red rimmed eyes, the tears still run
As he fades into the setting sun
