Coming back to life

This is a really beautiful song made by Pink Floyd, after Roger Waters went solo, and it's from the album "The division bell". The song is written by David Gilmour, and is actually a love poem to his wife Polly Samson. How romantic! For example when he sings: "The things you say and the things you do surround me" and "dangerous but irresistible pastime", he is referring to sex. This is confirmed by David. (Vance).

David in the early years

Funny fun-facts!! That's why I love Pink Floyd books! You can find all these things about the band, and it's not things that all your friends will know anything about.

This song has been one of my favourites (of the songs made after Roger left), but still, I didn't listen to it much two years ago! There was this cover band who opened my eyes for this song, and the cover band is a band every Pink Floyd fans need to check out! The band is called "The Australia Pink Floyd Show", so just check out when they are playing in a town near you ;)
Here is a clip from the show where they played this lovely song:

Just listen to the beautiful voice, and the amazing guitar play!! This band is really really good! Too bad they're not coming to Norway this year, but I'm crossing my fingers that they'll be here soon :)

I really do like Pink Floyds work, also after Roger Waters, but the craziness is missing. The songs are so beautiful, and the songs really touch you're heart. But I can't feel the crazyness. But that's all right :) As long as I'm switching from David's Pink Floyd to Roger's Pink Floyd, I'll get the best of both worlds!
Pink Floyd without Roger

It's soon time for bed, so I'll put the original version of the song, and the lyrics as well, so you all can get a good night sleep after listening to this fantastic song!

Video from the gig in 1994.. Oh how I wish I were there <3 Maybe I was too young, but it would have been a great start as a Pink Floyd fan

Where were you when I was burned and broken
While the days slipped by from my window watching
Where were you when I was hurt and helpless
Because the things you say and the things you do surround me
While you were hanging yourself on someone else's words
Dying to believe in what you heard
I was staring straight into the shining sun

Lost in thought and lost in time
While the seeds of lifeand the seeds of change were planted
Outside the rain fell dark and slow
While I pondered on this dangerous but irresistible pastime
I took a heavenly ride through our silence
I knew the moment had arrived
For killing the past and coming back to life

I took a heavenly ride through our silence
I knew the waiting had begun
And headed straight..into the shining sun

I also want to dedicate this song to my lovely boyfriend, who made my life so much better <3 Love you babe!

Apples and oranges

The very first time I heard this song, was when I randomly found it on youtube. At first I was quite confused, because I thought I heard Syd Barretts voice, but in the video, Roger was 'singing'. But he did it in a very funny way. It looked like he only were fooling around. Then it didn't took me long to understand that the video were made after Syd left the group, and when they made the video, they needed someone to 'be' Syd.

From left: Richard, Roger, Nick and Syd

The song "Apples and oranges" is the third single by Pink Floyd, and also the very last one written by the wonderful Syd Barrett. The song didn't came out as big as some of the other songs by Pink Floyd. Roger said: 'Apples and Oranges' was destroyed by the production. It's a fucking good song', and he blamed the disaster on their producer Norman Smith.

This is the single. "Apples and oranges" on side A, and "Paint box" on side B

Syd himself said this about the song: "It's a happy song, and it's got a touch of Christmas. It's about a girl who I saw just walking round town, in Richmond."

This video always make me laugh!! :) Love it!

An absolutely fantastic song! It's a feel-happy song :)
Have a lovely evening, and feel free to sing-a-long with the song!

Got a flip-top pack of cigarettes in her pocket
Feeling good at the top
Shopping in sharp shoes
Walking in the sunshine town feeling very cool
But the butchers and the bakers in the supermarket stores
Getting everything she wants from the supermarket stores
Apples and oranges
Apples and oranges

Cornering neatly she trips up sweetly
To meet the people
She's on time again
And then
I catch her by the eye then I stop and have to think
What a funny thing to do 'cause I'm feeling very pink
Apples and oranges
Apples and oranges

I love she
She loves me
See you

apples and oranges

Thought you might like to know
I'm her lorry driver man
She's on the run
Down by the river side
feeding ducks in the afternoon tide
Apples and oranges
Apples and oranges
Apples and oranges

The Gnome

This is one of the last tracks on the album "The piper at the gates of dawn". It's written and sung by Syd Barrett. The song is of course about a Gnome. It's funny how he made all this cosy and 'feel-happy-songs'. You actually don't need to listen to the lyrics, but listen to the melody.
But anyways, the lyrics are quite cosy as well!!

A gnome

I want to tell you a story
About a little man
If I can.
A gnome named Grimble Grumble.
And little gnomes stay in their homes.
Eating, sleeping, drinking their wine.
He wore a scarlet tunic,
A blue green hood,
It looked quite good.
He had a big adventure
Amidst the grass
Fresh air at last.
Wining, dining, biding his time.
And then one day - hooray!
Another way for gnomes to say
Hoooooooooray.
Look at the sky, look at the river
Isn't it good?
Look at the sky, look at the river
Isn't it good?
Winding, finding places to go.
And then one day - hooray!
Another way for gnomes to say
Hoooooooooray.
Hooooooooooooooray.

First time I listend to this song, I think I was sitting and smiling for myself for a very long time. The song just made me happy. But then again, what Pink Floyd song doesen't make me happy?! Well, there is some songs that don't make me directly happy, but they sure do make me feel something.

The song was made in the mid sixties, and it marked the beginning of the psychedelic era! And Syd was a king. There were so many people who liked the music, but I might think that they were listening to it, becase it was populare! But at least there must have been a few really big fans. I really do hope so ;)

I wanted to show you all the song on youtube to put a clip here, but I couldn't find ONE original version, just covers.. Well, I've got a better idea! Run and buy the cd for you're Pink Floyd collection.
The back of the cd

Listen to this wondeful fairytale, and have a lovely day!

Another Brick In The Wall

This song I remember I went around tryimg to sing when I was quite young. Didn't know the lyrics at all, but thought I did. I knew that it was something about school, and that it was borring or something.. But than again. I was quite young.
In my later years as a Floyd fan, this song is the song that remind people about the band. People may not know what band it is, but I reckon that most people have heard this song. And everytime I talk about the band, and people say: "What? is that a band?", I say yes, and they made the song "Another brick in the wall", and than they go "aaaah.. didn't know that"..

From the movie

When I started to understand the lyrics (that means when I learn to speak some english), I still couldn't  understand what the band wanted to tell the world.. We do need education! Even if it's just primary school and high school, or so on, we need education. So I couldn't put the bricks together. The song didn't make sense to me.

But then, when I grew a bit more, I finally understood what their message was. People need education, but we also need teachers who can do their work, and not drag down people who maybe wants to be a writer, or do somthing 'outside the box', seen from a teachers view. People can't be laughed at, just becase they want to do something 'different'. It's hard to explain, but I hope you all see my point!

The animation of the teacher

I probably toldy you all about my Pink Floyd books before, and in my 'latest' book, (The making of the wall by Gerald Scarfe), I red something about this particular song.

GS:What Roger means about “We don’t need no education” is that we don’t need no education of that particular type: teacher ill-treating the children.

Both Nick and Roger had teachers whom hurt the children with hitting or word abuse. Example: Nick had a master who threw a blackboard eraser with a heavy wooden back which hit him in the head. This happened on Nick’s birthday, and the master said that that was his birthday present.

This is both examples that some in the band wasn't treated good by their teacher.

We can also see in the movie "The Wall", that teh teacher is making fun of a student who writes poems. The teacher is mocking him by taking up the book he has written the poem in, and he says in front of the whole class:
What have we here, laddie? Mysterious scribblings? A secret code? No! Poems, no less! Poems, everybody!
The laddie reckons himself a poet!
"Money get back / I'm all right, Jack / Keep your hands off my stack / New car / Caviar / Four star daydream / Think I'll buy me a football team." Absolute rubbish, laddie
Get on with your work.
This I see as a good example of what they really means with this song! The teacher is punishing the student, even though the student didn't do anything wrong. (the teacher is also hitting the student on the arms to punish him)

Fat Old Sun

Wonderful song <3 Gaaah... It's from the album "Atom Heart Mother" (one of my favourite albums), and there is something about this song that just makes me smile. The song is written, and also sung by David Gilmour. Once again we can see a masterpiece from this man.
I've always been more of a Roger Waters fan, but that doesen't mean that I don't love David's work too!
David Gilmour

It's often that I compare a song with one of the band members, and this has David Gilmour written all over!! And that's why I will put a video of the song here, from 2006 when David had a gig in Gdansk. Richard Wright was also in this gig <3

It's something about this performance that makes my eyes fill up with tears everytime I watch it.. <3 Maybe it's because it was one of Richards last gigs, and he did such a good job.. Or maybe it's just that this was a really great gig...
"Atom heart mother" cover

Anyways.. I don't know anything special of what this song is about, but it does makes me happy, so it must have been something good!! The lyrics are so cheerful, and they kind off describe a perfect summer(which we all miss here in Norway!)..
Here's the lyrics as well, and have a lovely night

When that fat old sun in the sky is falling,
Summer evening birds are calling.
Summer's thunder time of year,
The sound of music in my ears.
Distant bells,
New mown grass smells so sweet.
By the river holding hands,
Roll me up and lay me down.
And if you sit,
Don't make a sound.
Pick your feet up off the ground.
And if you hear as the warm night falls
The silver sound from a time so strange,
Sing to me, sing to me.
When that fat old sun in the sky is falling,
Summer evening birds are calling.
Children's laughter in my ears,
The last sunlight disappears.

Have a cigar

This song is fantastic! As well as almost every other Pink Floyd songs :p The first time I really noticed this song, was a couple of years ago, when I first went to a Roger Waters concert. Then he was touring with "Dark side of the wall". He played the entire album "Dark side" in the second half of the show, but in the first half, he played a bit of everything.
Pictures taken from the first show I went to. You can see my good friend David Kilminster far left, then Snowy White in the middle and then Roger Waters to the right.

The guitar playing in this song is amazing, and so catchy!! And when David played this song, I knew he were one of the best to play this music!!
I also thought it was fantastic that Roger choose this to be one of the songs on this tour! I would never think so.. After the gig, I had this song on my brain for so long, and played it over and over again!!

Listen to it, and enjoy!

Have a lovely weekend all you Floyd fans ;)

High hopes

My sisters favourite PF song. Such a pretty song!
The song is on the album "The division bell" which is the last album by Pink Floyd (without Roger Waters, that is!). It's a song that makes you get all emotional.. It's hard to explain, but the song does something with you. I don't know if it's the bell's that are ringing, the lyrics or what it is.!

The music video (this picture is from the video!) is magical!!!

The song is written by David Gilmour, but also with a bit help from his wife, Polly Samson. The song is actually about Davids childhood and early life. David says that the song became more personal then he first had planned.
David later said:
"The process in the recording studio is just as important. Or more. That is a very... frustrating and satisfying process at different times. When you get something and it sounds just how you heard it in your head and you think, "That's going to get across to people." There are moments when something happens quickly and wonderfully. High Hopes on the last record. I wrote it very quickly, the words with my now wife Polly. I went into the studio on my own and demoed the whole thing, played everything. Did it in a day. Came out of the studio at the end of the day {quiet whisper} feeling ****ing fantastic. That moment. That joy, the pride at having got to that point was absolute magic. And the obverse is when you just can't... but I'm not going to name tracks."

I reckon that he might have been talking about "High hopes" :)

The video, as I said, is absolutely fantastic!!! I don't know why.. But everything is in slow-motion, and it fits perfect with the music.. A masterpiece, I'll say!
No wonder that the video is so good. It was directed by Storm Thorgerson. I will write more about this man later on, but just so you know, he were in the british art group, Hipgnosis, and he has made the covers for albums like "Animals", "Dark side of the moon" etc.. Brilliant man....

Lucifer Sam

It's been a while now since the last time I wrote, but I reckon that's ok!!

I've been listening to "The piper at the gates of dawn" lately, and I love the album so much! This is, as I probably have mentioned before, the only one made with Syd Barrett. He did do some of the guitar playing on "A saucerful of secrets", but Gilmour had to fill in some parts.
Anyhow, the song "Lucifer Sam" is one of my favourites from this album. I love the name Lucifer! I think it's such a nice name!! I don't see the name like some satan name :p I can't see the religious and negativity with the name!

The cover

As a big Barrett fan, I think all his songs are amazing! Of course, I do love his solo albums, but when it's Pink Floyd, it's automaticly magical!!

Hey, the song is about a cat.... I don't like cats... Maybe cats are like satan.. :p ahhaha!!! Sorry to all you cat lovers, but I think I understand what this song is about! And it's not good for cats!!
I think.... I don't know.. Just love to make up my own opinions!! :)

Good night everybody!!
(Before you go to bed, listen to the song! It makes you feel so happy!! Cause it's a funny song!

"That cat's something I can't explain"

Love this picture.. (From left: Rick, Roger, Nick and Syd)
